Award for meeeeee!!!!

I recently got comments from three different people saying they had named me for an award on their blog! Infertile Farmer and SLESE1014 at Fertility Frustration both awarded me the same award. (Jenny also commented that she had given me an award, but Jenny! I am unable to access your blog from your profile! Let me know where you are!)*

The award stated:

The rules for accepting the award are:

1. Thank and link back to the person/people who gave you the award.
2. Share 7 things about yourself.
3. Award 7/15 other bloggers. (They each had a different number, but I'm going to go with 7 because I'm a little overwhelmed by choosing 15!)
4. Contact those bloggers to tell them about the award.

So here we go...

1) I have ten piercings. Nine of them are in my ears. My favorite one is my most recent, a forward helix.
2) I was given a yellow teddy bear when I was 6 months old. I still sleep with it.
3) I used to be a book-a-holic. I'd read in the car, in the grocery store (holding on to the cart as my mom pushed it) and under my desk at school. My mother would punish me when I was naughty by sending me to her room because all of my books were in my room. (I still love to read, but don't do so nearly as much.)
4) When I was in my late twenties, the one part of my body I was never happy with was my stomach. Now I'd kill to have that stomach back again. It was rockin', if I do say so myself!
5) I would love to travel to Greece, especially the islands, but III doesn't like to travel out of the US.
6) I used to be very frugal- I literally counted my pennies. Since getting married, I have been able to relax in that area, but sometimes I miss it because it was a source of pride to me that I was successful at it.
7) In the last few years, I've become fascinated with the idea of reincarnation and past lives. If one has a soul mate, I truly believe that KB is mine. This season on Grey's, Meridith said "Derek is the love of my life, but Cristina is my soul mate." That's exactly how I feel about III and KB.

So there you go! That was harder than I thought! LOL.

The 7 bloggers that award...

1) Kakuuna at Through My Eyes
2) LisainSK at WANTED: One good embryo
-both of these ladies are loyal readers and commenters on my blog! Thanks for sticking with me!
3) JC at Steps to Baby. JC has hit that point in the last couple of months that many of us hit, where this whole process has become overwhelming. She is pushing through, though, and exploring adoption while figuring out where she stands in the IF journey.
4) Jen at Maybe if you just relax has been through more than her share recently. But she continues to post her witty commentary on her experiences and say F-YOU to the shittiness of infertility and loss.
5) The Infertile Gynecologist is a new read for me. She gives a VERY interesting perspective on this whole thing. And if you think your life has you surrounded by pregnancy and babies... whoooo. I don't know how she does it!
6) Cece at Child Bearing Hips is a fellow boxer lover. :) She has a great attitude, even after infertility and unexpected, unexplained loss.
7) And of course, Frenchie at Miss Inconceivability. One of the first IF blogs I found, and still one of my favorites. After dealing with difficulties of infertility, success with adoption, surprise pregnancy, and that another surprise pregnancy that ended in a loss, she is now navigating some of the more difficult parts of parenthood.

Thanks to those of you who awarded me! And for my loyal readers, and those of you who continue blogging so that we all feel like there are others out there who understand what we are dealing with. xo

*As a very successful and practiced Google-stalker, I was able to track Jenny down at Try Try Again. (I did an advanced search in the past week for my blog name + award specifically on blogspot.com.) Does that make me creepy? Regardless, thanks Jenny!

I apologize in advance for this totally lame post...

One of the things that has bothered me in the past about ICLW is when I try to comment on blogs and people who have signed up don't post all week.

But here I am, not great about posting this ICLW week.

I have a whole story about something that happened with III this week, but I just don't have the energy right now.

So I thought I'd link to some important me stuff from past posts for anyone who is interested.

The story of my best girl.

The worst week of my life- when I lost my hard fought pregnancy and my sweet girl.

How I met my DH.

All about anxiety
.

The long explanation of our whole chromosomal thingy.

So there are a couple for now... :)

Oh, and I want to add a shout out for The R House blog and Mrs. R's giveaway. :) If you've ever considered adopting, you must check out her blog- amazing family with an amazing story- and amazing adoption advocates!

My shit.

I walked into my clinic yesterday, signed in for my blood test, and turned to find a seat in the waiting room.

Only to be faced with what most of us probably dread.

A familiar face at the RE office.

N and I worked together a few years ago. Feelings at my school about him were mixed, but I liked him a lot. I also really liked his wife. So much, that a year or so later when I decided to brave acupuncture, I called her. (As she's an acupuncturist.)

So anyway. We chatted for a bit. About non IF stuff initially. Then I got called back for my draw, and when I returned he asked me about where we were at in our cycle. I told him the whole history... We didn't get to where they're at- his wife must have been having a procedure (maybe an ER?) and he got called back.

So... awkward. That feeling of nervousness about having to "come out" to a new person. Followed by a feeling of camaraderie, because- hey. They're clearly in the room for the same reason. Quickly followed by that kick in the gut- shit. Not them too.

I've contemplated emailing his wife. To say hello. To commiserate. To talk to someone who is 'in the trenches'; someone IRL who really gets it.

But I haven't. Why not?

Well there are two reasons. One is petty and easy to get past. The other.... well, it is paralyzing me.

#1- I stopped seeing her as my acupuncturist. First because I stopped having acupuncture, but I've recently started going again and didn't go back to her. Not because I didn't like her or she didn't do a good job- but just because of distance. I purposely chose an acupuncturist this time who's office is literally five minutes away from my house. So I feel some guilt about not going to her anymore... but I'm sure she'd understand.

But there's still #2.

She was there for a procedure. While it could be a laparoscopy or a hystoscopy or some other scopy, it's very possibly an egg retrieval.

What if it works?

Don't get me wrong- if it does, well, hell. Yay for them! It's just that I feel so alone in this process. And every time another someone who "got it" gets pregnant... it just highlights that, yes. I am alone in this. No one else is exactly where I am, right now. No one else has been through the exact same process I have been. I'm not trying to compare- I'm not saying "Well, my shit has been worse than her shit." But... my shit is my shit, and nobody else can totally get that.

I participated in Creme de la Creme... and I especially loved this post. Yes. Exactly. Once you cross over to 'that side'... well, your on that side. And I'm still over here. Going through all of my shit.

Attempting to be productive

First, I'd like to thank those of you who left comments on my delurking post. It's nice to know I have some readers... I notice from my feedjit that I tend to have a lot of visitors, but its hard to know how many are actually reading, how many are returning, or how many are just clicking in and out... Maybe it shouldn't matter as this blog was supposed to be a catharsis for me, but I find I like the idea that what I say might resonate with others...

For the last few months I have a tendency to want to spend my free time on the couch or in my bed. I just don't have a lot of motivation to do anything. So this weekend, I made a list that consists of both things I have to do and things I want to do. It had ten things on the list, and yesterday I crossed off three and a half. That might not seem like a lot, but I was pleased. It felt good to do something productive, even if it was only a third of what needs/wants to get done.

So I'm going to try to continue my productive streak today, despite the cold weather making me want to curl up under a blanket. Then again, one of the things on my list is to work on finishing the sweater I'm knitting, so maybe that's a good excuse.... :)

C'mon and delurk!

I'm a little behind, but Melissa tells us that 1/4-1/10 is Blog Delurking week!

So if you are a reader of my blog, I'd love to hear from you. Drop me a comment, say hi, and let me know if there are any questions you have or anything you'd like me to share on my blog. :) If you have a blog, I'd love to know about it as well.

Happy Friday!

ISO blue day remedies...

Walking up the stairs to my classroom this morning, I thought "I'm having a cranky day." (already!)

Then I thought "Geez, I'm perpetually down lately, so if, at 7am, I can already identify this as a 'blue day' that's not a very good thing..."

I'm a doer. I want to be able to control what's going on with me. (That's part of what makes this IF stuff so hard.) I thought "What can I do to put myself in a better mood?"

So I'm here to ask my blog buddies: What do you do to cheer yourself up and help a bad mood improve? I need suggestions!

Giving thanks...

I just wanted to say a quick thank you to all of you for the comments you leave me on my posts. As shitty as I've been feeling, I always get a little thrill when I see I have a comment on a post I've written, and often your thoughts and wishes make me smile, even if only for a moment. I really appreciate all of you. It makes a very lonely, isolating situation seem a little less so.

Thank YOU!!!

Something a little lighter

Thanks to ICLW, I saw this on "babybaker"'s page.

Here’s how it works: you have to mention (and link) to the blog where you saw it. Then use Google images to explain your answers for each category listed below. Join the fun!

(Babybaker listed the phrase she searched for, but I chose to only post the photo... )

1. Favorite beverage

2. Your hometown

3. Favorite TV show

4. Your occupation

5. Your first car

6. Your favorite dish

7. Celebrity you’ve been told you most resemble (this one was hard... there is no "most often" so I just chose two I have been told at one time or another...)

8. Celebrity crush

9. Favorite childhood toy

10. Any random photo

Where I don't fit in

Not long after my miscarriage, KB sent me a link to Res.olve. I already knew about Res.olve, but I've felt wary about joining an infertility support group, either there or through my clinic. There are a number of reasons... but one stands out more than others. It's the same reason I tend to avoid message boards.

I appear to have a different take on early pregnancy than many of the women who are ttc. Or at least many of the women who seek support. It's very hard to explain in words... but some of my feelings since my miscarriage have brought the difference to the forefront.

Since we started trying (during which time many, many friends and family have had babies), I've been thinking about names. While III and I haven't really talked about it, I recently realized that I have a name in my head that I expect I will name my daughter. (Silly, considering III does actually have some say in the matter.) I love the name Leia, and, based on modern Jewish tradition, we would be naming our baby 'after' III's grandmother, who's name began with an L. (The middle name I like is Elise, after my grandma, who had a personality and irreverence I would love to see in a daughter.)

Since finding out that this baby would have been a girl,* I've been having a little bit of a harder time. I actually don't have a preference of what gender our baby is. (I'd really like to have one of each...) I would love to see III with a son, but he'd be mush with a daughter which I also will enjoy, and my mom... well, she really wants a granddaughter.

*Just the way I phrased that... it's not what I usually see on an IF blog.

So those things... I think they have made this whole thing sting a bit more.

In spite of that, I don't feel like I lost a daughter. As I explained last month, it hurts that we've lost the potential of this baby- of this potential daughter.

As I was sitting, reading others' blogs today I started thinking about this lost pregnancy, and this exact thought popped into my head:

"This pregnancy wasn't Leia."

Which is where I differ. This wasn't my baby. It doesn't have a name, I don't think about where it is, I don't wonder who it was (or would have been)... it just isn't.

I feel a little uncomfortable expressing this here- because so many of you feel that the pregnancies you lost are now angels in heaven and lost lives. And I'm not trying to take that away from you or imply that you are wrong.

It's just not how I feel about mine. It is a big part of what keeps me from the support groups and infertility message boards- and sometimes, it makes me feel like I'm on the outside....

a WOW for support!

WOW.

Thanks to whoever submitted my blog to LFCA! When I got the first comment, I had no idea what it meant. Then as more poured in, I goo.gled it and found the blog. Thanks so much for all of your kind words, thoughts and prayers. Honestly, this is probably messed up, but the most reassuring thing to me about it is knowing that this is a really crappy deal, and I'm not just feeling sorry for myself.

But, damn, do I feel sorry for myself.

Today I am wearing my new sweater and my favorite boots. But it's not helping because I am CRANKY. I want to be at home, in sweatpants, on the couch, watching some stupid TV show and wasting time on face.book. Instead, I have to stay late because it's my extra help day, and then I have a T-O-N of grading to do, because I'm still catching up from being out last week. Unfortunately, I could not feel any less motivated.

One of the only benefits of not being pregnant is that I went shopping at my favorite wine store yesterday and am excited about my purchases. Can't wait to uncork a new bottle tonight and see how it is.

TGIF

I am exhausted and do not feel super. It's hard to make it through a full day of teaching without starting to feel crappy by the end of it. I think I've been pretty good about eating and staying hydrated throughout the day, but by about 1pm I'm pooped and often nauseous.

Today I woke up to a very little pink spotting again, exactly like Wednesday. Except, today there were 2 tiny clots. They weren't very big and there was no other bleeding so I did not call my dr. I know in general they say you should call if you have clots, but considering a) they were really small b) there was no other bleeding and c) I just had an u/s yesterday I decided to wait and see how things go. It's the weekend, so I can relax and if it happens again I'll definitely call.

Look how calm I'm being? Aren't you proud? I am. I'm working hard. The great u/s yesterday certainly helps. I'm sure that will only last so long, though. It's going to be a long 33 weeks!

I made my first pregnancy purchase on the recommendation of a friend. The book "The Girl.friend's Gui.de to Preg.nancy". I'm only 30 pgs into it, but so far I like it. It's less of the medical and technical sides of things, and more advice from other women.

In other news, B-dog has a new and strange symptom. She has ulcerations on her tongue (one going all the way through) which are also causing some nasty rotting-smelling breath. (Really not great with my pregnancy nose...) I took her to the vet today and, as I had expected and hoped, they didn't do any biopsying or blood testing. It just doesn't make sense considering we know she has progressive cancer. The vet gave me antibiotics and an oral wash, which will hopefully take care of the stinky mouth and clear up any infection that might be causing or related to the sores. Luckily, other than that she is still feeling pretty good.

Finally, yay for C by the Sea! She just got a spectacular beta, and it's looking like there may be twins in her future! Woo hoo!

Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend. :)

The cost of IF.

Yesterday, I read about Megan's IF coverage being "maxed out". It got me thinking about my own. In the beginning, I didn't look too much into it because the idea of hitting our limit seemed so far off in the future. As we get further and further into this, especially after a "wasted" IVF last cycle, I figured I should check it out.

The insurance I'm currently on covers a maximum of 6 IVF cycles. This is based on medication, so it does not include FET. So we are at 2. It is a bit of a relief to know that we have those frozen embryos, so we have the possibility of some tries that don't use up our coverage... but I really, really want more than one baby, so chances are we will eventually have to do this again....

Money has always made me crazy. It is my #1 anxiety inducer. But to be perfectly honest... it shouldn't be anymore. III's family is pretty well off, and he had a good chunk of savings before we got married. If our insurance did max out, we would likely have the means to pay for the treatments.

(I'm cringing as I'm typing this. I know some of you probably hate me for it- I can't imagine what you are going through, struggling to scrape together money for treatments, or worse having to make the difficult decision to take a break or completely stop, solely based on financial issues.... keep reading, though... I address this more at the end...)

It also got me thinking about what happens when we finally do get pregnant. Right now, I have my insurance and III has his- a "family" plan is the same amount where there are two or ten of us, so since we both have insurance benefits with our job, we're currently separate. But once there's another of us, we'll likely get a family plan. The thing is... who's insurance??? I definitely have better insurance than III. BUT any maternity leave I take that is not covered by my contract (which is only six weeks) I will have to pay the whole premium for my insurance. I don't know how much time I'll want to take... so it seems to make sense to go with III's insurance, even though it doesn't cover as much stuff. (In general, not IF.)

I don't, however, know what his insurance allows for IF treatments. We live in one of the states that mandates insurance, so I know something would be covered, but don't know how much. Plus, is IF considered a pre-existing condition? So complicated.

I almost didn't create this post, because I feel like such a whiner considering how many of you ladies out there are dealing with IF that is not covered by insurance. So I did a little research... http://www.resolve.org/ is an organization that deals with infertility issues- there are suggestions and help on there for how to make ART "more affordable", but also there is information about how to contribute to the cause of getting IF coverage nationwide. There are currently two Family Building Acts out there- HR 697 and S 1258- that would require insurers to cover infertility treatment. You can find more information on them, and see how you, as a voter and citizen, can contribute here.

My thoughts on ICLW.

So my first foray into ICLW has ended.

I tried to be diligent about my commenting, though sometimes I lost count. There may be some days I only made 4 or 5 comments, but there were definitely others where I made 7-10. I'm not sure if I met the "respond to one" each day either... I tried, but I'm not sure how successful I was.

I joined ICLW, in part, in hopes that I would discover new blogs I was interested in reading regularly, as well as hoping some new readers would discover mine.

I think I met my first goal... maybe two or three new blogs to follow. I'm not sure about the second. The comments I got tended to be a one time thing... there were not many repeaters.

The hardest thing about ICLW for me was that it seemed, at least for the blogs I tended to check more often, that people didn't update their blogs. It's hard to comment if there isn't anything new. I wonder if that should be part of the requirements of joining ICLW. 5 new comments, 1 reply, and at least... say 3 posts during the week.

So there's my two cents on the experience. I don't think I'll be a monthly participant, but I'm sure I'll be back. :) It was nice to "meet" all the bloggers who visited from ICLW. Thanks for all of your supportive comments, and I hope you enjoyed reading. :)

More on my blog list.

I got a little off track on my post yesterday and didn't completely finish my thought. The reason my reorganization is selfish is because, by separating the pregnant from the wanna-bes, I can choose what I want to read. More and more I'm having days where I'm not sure I can read about pregnancy symptoms and baby shopping. No disrespect to the pregnant mamas- I'm sure when I get there I'll be doing the same thing. I'm just not sure I can take it right now... at least not on a daily basis.

Of course, I still get caught. I joined ICLW for this month. I went through the list and bookmarked a couple of new blogs I thought I might enjoy reading. One of them that I just bookmarked 3 days ago... BFP today. Yep.

I talked to KB today- she's having spotting, which is not something she's ever had before. And she's at a point in her cycle where it could be implantation spotting. So she might be pregnant. She's feeling very impatient. She got pregnant with M on the first try. This is her second month trying this time around and she used O.PKs. She has to drink a lot of water, though, for her kid.ney stones so her urine is too dilute for the O.PKs to work well. So she said if she's not pregnant this month she may go to her doctor for a test on ovulation. Really? Two months? She said "I know two months isn't that long" and I know it's frustrating month to month... but look at the numbers. With a ~20% chance per month of getting pregnant, and then getting pregnant the first month on the first try, what are the chances of it happening again?

I'm just not going to be very good at being very supportive anytime soon.

Sad stuff.

M-dog got a dental scaling today. $800 later (yikes!) I went to pick him up. While I was waiting, the door to one of the exam rooms opened and I saw four young men and women (siblings I think) in the room. One of them was repeatedly kissing the fuzzy white dog laying on the table. Another was wearing her sunglasses inside. I realized they had just put their dog to sleep. The first clearly did not want to leave. When her brother/boyfriend finally led her out of the room, she broke down into audible sobs.

It was all I could do not to cry with her.

I felt so bad for them. And then I felt bad for me knowing that sometime in the probably near future, that will be me.

I'm so sad for them and hope that whoever they are, wherever they are, they somehow sense the empathy and healing vibes I am sending them.

*******

I have reorganized my bloglist into three. It may seem, at first glance, that I am just trying to be more organized (because, aren't I always? Even if I don't succeed?), but really I have a more selfish reason.

Pregnant blog friends: I am happy for you. I really am. And, though as I've stated in the past there is some jealousy, the fact that each of you individually is pregnant isn't bothering me.

There are just so many of you. If you count, you'll find there are now more blogs in the "Parenting and pregnancy" list than the "TTC and dealing with IF" list. To be completely accurate, there were 3 IF blogs that I removed because either they haven't posted in months and months or, in once case, she deleted her blog. And 2 of the blogs in P&P are women who are still ttc after adopting. But still. While maybe the numbers of + should give me hope about getting pregnant myself, it sadly doesn't. It makes me feel left out. It makes me feel alone. It makes me worry that, though there is yet to be anything indicating that this could happen, I will never make it to that list.

*sigh*

Toooo early!

I'm on my way out, way too early in the morning, for a week's vacation. I probably won't be able to update until we get home, so I wanted to get a few things in before we leave.
(Clearly, I'm all about the lists lately.)
  • B-dog's appt: I was irritated because I specifically made the appt for yesterday because the vet isn't in on Mondays, and then she didn't really need to see the vet. Dumb. They took blood and said her lymph nodes are down a small amt, but not much. Then said they would call me with the bloodwork, but haven't yet. Great. So they'll call today when I'm 1500 miles away and can't do anything about it until Wednesday.
  • My appt: I cried. I'm such a baby. There wasn't really any new info. I stimmed well. I got seventeen eggs. None of them fertilized. She did say that once they did fertilize there is NOT a smaller chance of pregnancy after transfer. I asked the success rates post transfer, and she said it's 40% for my age range. They will do ICSI from now on and stim me a little slower so they don't have to back off the way they did (apparently you can lose some of the smaller follicles that way). The best news? I don't have to take a month off. I started b/c last night, will start lu.pron on the 13th and will probably have my ER around the last week of July. It means my parents might be here then, so we'll have to deal with that, but whatever.
  • Nervous to leave B-dog. I'm generally nervous leaving, but esp this time. One of my former students is house sitting and staying with the pups. She is the one who was here in Feb. when we went on vacation and B got sick, so I know she can and will deal with whatever arises. I'm just nervous that we have limited time left and I may be gone for her last feel-good week. I feel like I'm abandoning her. :(
  • Hugs to Reya who lost her own sweet pup yesterday.
I hope everyone has a great 4th of July!!!!

24 hours until ER

So yay for lots of follicles... but I started thinking about how many eggs that means... c had her retrieval yesterday. She had 28 measurable follicles and they retrieved 21 eggs. Pretty good odds! 75%! (Yes, I am a math teacher...)

So I did a little goo.gling and found this chart:
So according to that, on average the number of eggs retrieved is around the number of follicles measured. Hopefully that will be the case for me!

I put one of the retainers into one of my piercings yesterday- its a 3 year old piercing. I think I'm actually going to take that one out right before the procedure. It's healed and a larger gauge so an hour shouldn't be a big deal. The other two are much smaller gauge and only four months old. I'm going to try to put the retainers in in the morning and see how it goes. It took me forty five minutes to put the barbell in the tragus two months ago and there was lots of blood and swelling. *sigh*

I'm having definite cramping, especially on the right, and my boobs are killing me. I hate it every time I have a new protocol/procedure because I hate not knowing exactly what to expect.

Non ttc related:

As I've mentioned before, I've been trying to add one housekeeping habit periodically. The dishes were the first, and now I'm trying to make sure I put my clothes away each night when I get into my pjs (instead of leaving them sitting on top of my dresser until there is a mountain o' clothes). I maintain that III notices what I don't do and doesn't pay attention to the things I do do.

Last night, I asked him- "Have you noticed my newest household resolution?" Guess what- he hasn't. He walked around last night trying to figure it out, and he couldn't. He actually has commented in the past about my clothes being on the dresser, but now that they haven't been there for two weeks, he didn't even notice!!! I don't know if I should be irritated or feel smug that I was right. ;)
